Professional Affairs Advisory Boards

Be part of the HNS leadership team

HNS’ mission is to make health care more accessible, more effective and more affordable. Accordingly, HNS strives to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care delivery system in our service area, and to help control the costs of that health care. Strong leadership by contracted providers, as evidenced by their active and ongoing participation in the management and direction of HNS, is essential for HNS to meet these objectives.

HNS’ Professional Affairs Advisory Boards (PAAB) serve as a primary mechanism for network physicians to be actively involved in the management of HNS. (Network providers also serve on the HNS Credentialing Committee and HNS Hearing Panels.) PAAB members provide invaluable leadership to the HNS management team regarding existing and contemplated programs and initiatives and assist the management team in important decision-making on issues that impact the network and the patients we serve. Further, the boards help to foster open communication and collaboration between HNS management and the network physicians.

PAABs are maintained in five districts in NC and two districts in SC. (See districts below.) Each district is represented by ten physicians who practice in the region and HNS is represented by two members of the HNS Provider Relations Committee, a subcommittee of the HNS Board of Directors. (So that more physicians have an opportunity to serve, efforts are made to appoint physicians who have not previously served.)

Appointment to the PAAB is for a term of two years. The boards meet four times each year, once each quarter. Meetings are held in a private dining room at a local restaurant in your district, and HNS provides dinner. The meetings begin at 6:30 and last approximately 2.5 hours. Meetings are held on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings.

Expectations of Advisory Board members:

  • Have a desire to be a part of the HNS leadership team, and commit to attend each meeting.
  • Become familiar with the network’s programs and initiatives.
  • Recognize the importance of their role as a member of the PAABs.
  • Inform colleagues they are serving on the HNS Professional Affairs Advisory Board, that they hold this position as their liaison and through them, will share their thoughts, ideas, or concerns directly with this Board.
  • Share information regarding HNS’ programs and services with their colleagues.
  • Conduct themselves with the highest degree of professionalism, in accordance to the HNS Code of Conduct, and be respectful to all members of the Board on which they serve, even when they have differing opinions.
  • Other than attending PAAB meetings, with few exceptions, appointments to a PAAB do not involve any additional time commitment.

Board members serve at the discretion of HNS. HNS reserves the right to terminate the service of any member of a Board, at any time, should HNS determine a member’s continued service is not in the best interests of HNS.
